Welcome! I'm Julie Guerra, an experienced and certified teacher and dedicated caregiver with over twenty years of experience in teaching and childcare. I created The Weekend Teacher as I spent many years in the classroom discovering how to develop engaging, organized, and deliberate learning experiences that are tailor-made to meet the individual needs and goals of my students.
I grew up in Houston, TX, and I graduated from The University of Houston in 2006. I began my teaching career in Special Education at Roberts Elementary School. I continued in Special Education and was also a Foreign English teacher in Taitung, Taiwan, and later fell in love with early childhood education back in Houston at Herod Elementary school, where I spent many years as a kindergarten teacher. I have been a private educator, tutor, and caregiver in New York City for 6 years. I specialize in early childhood development, as well as teaching reading, language arts, and math for elementary school-aged students. I am additionally certified and experienced in working with students who have special needs and gifted and talented students, and I have several years of experience in administering testing for several early childhood standard tests.
All children have unique learning abilities, and I understand that there is not just one method, strategy, or routine that works for every child. I use a combination of pencil-to-paper and hands-on learning strategies to methodically teach skills and concepts, and I have high expectations met with a nurturing approach. I create lessons that target areas of support or enrichment based on each student's learning styles and interests, and I collect, track, and share data to drive my instruction and help tackle the demands of a rigorous curriculum.
